About this tool

Gold price today, and what it means for the gold you own

Fair Gold Price shows the live gold spot price and turns it into a dollar value for the ring, chain, coin or bar in your hand.

What is the gold price today?

The gold price today is — per troy ounce. That is— per gram. The 1 kg gold price is—.

This is the gold spot price. It is the price of pure 24K gold, in US dollars, right now.

The price of gold today moves all day. We update it every minute and show the time next to it. If the price feed is down, you see a dash, never a guess.

The spot gold price is the same in every state. So the gold price today in the USA is one number. What changes from shop to shop is how much a buyer pays you.

Gold price today per gram, per ounce and per kilo

Gold is priced per troy ounce. A troy ounce is 31.1 grams. A kitchen ounce is only 28.35 grams, so do not mix them up.

  • Gold price today per ounce: —
  • Gold price today per gram: — (the ounce price divided by 31.1)
  • 1 kg gold price: — (the ounce price times 32.15)

The gold price table shows more units, like pennyweights.

Gold price today for 14K, 18K and other karats

Most jewelry is not pure gold. Karat tells you how much gold is in it, out of 24 parts.

  • 10K is 41.7% gold: — per gram
  • 14K is 58.3% gold: — per gram
  • 18K is 75% gold: — per gram
  • 22K is 91.7% gold: — per gram
  • 24K is pure gold: — per gram

So the gold price today per gram for 14K is the pure gold price times 0.583. Some pieces have a number stamp instead. 585 means 14K and 750 means 18K. See purity and hallmarks for the full list.

How the scrap gold calculator works

The scrap gold calculator asks three things:

  1. Is it gold or silver?
  2. What is stamped on it?
  3. How much does it weigh?

It multiplies the weight by the purity by the live gold price. The answer is the melt value. That is what the gold inside your item is worth today. You can see each step of the math.

  • Use grams if you can. Pennyweights, troy ounces, grains, kilograms and tolas work too.
  • Take off the weight of any stones.
  • Weigh each karat on its own. A 10K ring is worth much less than an 18K ring of the same weight.

The gold scrap calculator is free. You do not need an account. We do not buy gold.

Scrap gold price: what a buyer really pays

The gold scrap price a shop pays is lower than the spot price. The shop has to test the gold, melt or resell it, and make a profit.

Buyers usually pay 60% to 85% of melt value. A small gap is normal. A big gap means you should ask a second shop.

Do you have an offer already? Type it into the gold price calculator. It tells you in plain words how the offer compares with the melt value. You can add a testing fee or a commission too.

A gold price calculator for buyers too

Buying gold? Switch to “I’m buying”. The calculator starts with the metal value. Then it adds wastage, the making charge and your state’s sales tax. Enter the price on the tag to see how much you pay on top of the gold.

Silver price today

The silver spot price is — per troy ounce, or— per gram. Spot silver is priced the same way as gold.

The calculator works for sterling (925), coin silver (900), 800 silver and fine silver. Silver prices can move fast, so check silver prices today before you sell. See the silver price page and thegold/silver ratio.

Why do gold prices change?

Gold prices move with other markets. Three things matter most:

  • The US dollar. Gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar often pushes the gold price down.
  • Interest rates. Gold pays no interest, so higher rates make it cost more to hold.
  • Worry. Some investors move to gold when stocks fall.

Before you sell

Our guide to selling gold jewelry walks you through each step.

Melt value is an estimate. It is not an offer or an appraisal. Old coins and antique jewelry can be worth more than the gold in them, so ask a specialist before you sell those for scrap.

Selling your gold

Why does a shop offer less than the gold price?

Shops have costs, so they pay a little less. A small gap is normal. A big gap is a warning sign, so ask a second shop.

Are the shops on this site checked by you?

No. Always check a shop yourself first. We list shops from public sources and do not rate them. Look up the shop’s licence on your state’s website before you sell.

Are there any hidden fees?

Some shops charge a fee to test your item. Ask “Is there any fee?” before you hand anything over. Ask them to write the offer down.

ID, taxes and staying safe

Do I need to show ID to sell gold?

Yes, almost always. Most states make shops check your photo ID and keep a record of the sale. Bring a driver’s license or passport.

Will I owe tax or be reported to the IRS?

Usually not for old jewelry sold for less than you paid. Tax can apply if you sell for more than you paid. This is not tax advice, so ask a tax professional if you are unsure.

How can I stay safe when I sell?

Go to a real shop and never feel rushed. Bring a friend if you can. You can always say “no, thank you” and walk out.
