What the ratio tells you
The ratio is the gold price divided by the silver price. At a ratio of 80, one ounce of gold buys 80 ounces of silver.
A high ratio means silver is cheap compared with gold, by its own history. A low ratio means silver is relatively expensive.
The ratio says nothing about whether either metal is cheap or expensive in dollars. It is a comparison, not a forecast.
