Gold is priced per troy ounce, so this is the main price on our home page. A troy ounce is 31.1 grams.

Spot price, karats and history

How do I find out what my gold is worth?

Use our calculator.

Enter the weight and the karat stamped on your item, like 14K. It shows what the gold inside is worth today.

Selling your gold

Why does a shop offer less than the gold price?

Shops have costs, so they pay a little less.

A small gap is normal. A big gap is a warning sign, so ask a second shop.

Are the shops on this site checked by you?

No. Always check a shop yourself first.

We list shops from public sources and do not rate them. Look up the shop’s licence on your state’s website before you sell.

Are there any hidden fees?

Some shops charge a fee to test your item.

Ask “Is there any fee?” before you hand anything over. Ask them to write the offer down.

ID, taxes and staying safe

Do I need to show ID to sell gold?

Yes, almost always.

Most states make shops check your photo ID and keep a record of the sale. Bring a driver’s license or passport.

Will I owe tax or be reported to the IRS?

Usually not for old jewelry sold for less than you paid.

Tax can apply if you sell for more than you paid. This is not tax advice, so ask a tax professional if you are unsure.

How can I stay safe when I sell?

Go to a real shop and never feel rushed.

Bring a friend if you can. You can always say “no, thank you” and walk out.
